It’s 7:10am on a Friday morning and I’m on a modified City Circle train service to work. Instead of following its regular pattern stopping at every station, it now stops at Strathfield, Redfern, Central, and then Town Hall where I get off. I make a note to myself what a rare occurrence this is.
The train I’m on is an old K-set train from the 1980s. It’s my least favourite train as the seats are uncomfortable and the steel frame of the train shakes the carriages as it moves. To counteract the noise, I plug in my Airpods Pro and listen to music to pass the next 25 minutes. On most days I usually launch straight into my Liked Songs playlist listening to whatever song that fits my mood. This morning however I play a dedicated BTS playlist that I named “Nostalgic Bangtan“. The first song that came on was Butterfly, and it moved me to almost to tears.
(…) 살며시 쓰다듬는 바람 같아
Like a wind that gently strokes me,
살포시 표류하는 먼지 같아
like a dust that lightly drifts in the air,
넌 거기 있지만 왠지 닿지 않아
you’re there but, for some reason, I can’t reach you
Stop
꿈 같은 넌 내게 butterfly, high
A dream-like you, you’re a butterfly to me, high
Staring at the window and watching the world go by in an almost empty train, I was enchanted by the beauty of the rising sun lighting up the sleepy suburban streets. Time moved slowly, and fleetingly.
Butterfly is not my usual go-to ballad songs. It’s a pleasant song, but it’s one where I need to be in the right mood to appreciate its imagery and lyricism.
That morning was one of those moments.
